"What is it that brings meaning to life? What is it that makes those hard moments, the dark nights, and endless struggles worth the fight?" (Madeson, 2020)

There are many ways to explain the concept of meaning, some popular theories are:

CHIME Framework for Personal Recovery (Leamy, 2011); meaning is defined as: building a  meaningful life with meaningful roles and goals, along with finding meaning from your recovery journey.

PERMA Model of Wellbeing (Seligman, 2011); meaning includes:  having a sense of purpose and direction in life, feeling that life is valuable and worth living; meaning provides a sense that life matters (Butler and Kern, 2016).

PURE model of meaning; consisting of: Purposeful life goals, Understanding your core values, Responsibility to achieve your goals, and Enjoying the journey (Wong, 2010)

Research shows that meaning has a positive affect on wellbeing.

This online Moodle course is not going answer the age old question of the meaning of life...but aims to give students an overview of the concept of meaning from a positive psychology perspective, and how we can harness this to promote flourishing in personal recovery.

We will be keeping a reflective log during this course, so make sure you have a notebook/journal or similar for this course.
